Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission complies with the Journal ethical standards (based on COPE standards).
  • I accept the privacy and distribution policies of articles mentioned here and in the Statement of originality and authorization for publication.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The African Legal Traditions Registry is peer-review publication dedicated to register and disseminate of African legal heritage, traditions, and practices of different communities. We welcome original non-solicited contributions that describe any current or historical legal tradition of any part of Africa.

Text written by members of indigenous communities are especially welcomed. We also recommend coauthored manuscripts in which one coauthor has a background related to human rights or law, as a student, researcher or scholar.

Content. Articles must contain the following information:

  1. Country, county, village, tribe or community in which the tradition is verified.
  2. The explanation of the position of the author: if the author is part of the community, eyewitness, hearsay witness, or is providing historical research.
  3. A detailed description of the legal tradition. Authors are encouraged to incorporate ample evidence, photographs, and testimonies in their submissions. Very theoretical arguments are discouraged.

Extension, citations and style. While there is no strict word limit, we recommend submissions to be under 10,000 words. Citations must be consistent, according to Slaslec or Chicago styles. No reference table at the end. Titles must be numbered in Arabic numbers (2, 2.1, 2.1.1, etc.). Please, use the template to prepare you manuscript for submission.

Submissions. The Registry publishes four numbers every year. However, articles are published under the first online system, as soon as they are approved and edited. Contributions must be submitted online, any month of the year. The Registry does not accept hard copy submissions.

With the submission of any contribution the author accept the Registry policies, style guidelines, copyright License, and ethical standards.

After receiving the acceptance for publication, the author/s must sign the Declaration of originality and authorization.
