Special Issue: Beyond Formal Environmental Law (November 2024)

View Special Issue: Beyond Formal Environmental Law (November 2024)

This special issue on Environmental Law, is themed “Beyond formal law : the role of ethics, beliefs, and values in amplifying action against plastic pollution in Africa”. The central idea in the issue is that while formal laws play a critical role in tackling environmental challenges, they do not have absolute control over human behaviour. An often-overlooked body of informal laws—such as ethics, culture, beliefs, and religion—also shape individual and collective actions, coexisting with formal regulations, occasionally at odds and occasionally supportive. This issue explores how informal regulatory frameworks can be harnessed to strengthen and complement formal legal mechanisms in addressing plastic pollution.
